Radiothon a Success

MOUNT FOREST: The first ever 88.7 the River Radiothon is in the books! It was announced on April 19th that the River would be hosting a Radiothon in support of the Let’s Build it Campaign; a collaboration between the Mount Forest Aquatic Committee and the Mount Forest Lion’s Club.  Last Friday, May 3rd Rob Mattice, the radio station’s general manager went on the air at 6a.m in hopes of raising their set goal of $25,000 which will go towards building a splash pad in Mount Forest this summer at Lion Bill Moody Park. By 9:30p.m, the goal had been surpassed, thanks to the help and support of the community. “I’m very excited about the results,” said Mattice, “I knew our target of $25,000 would be tough but once again the Mount Forest community came through and we were able to meet our goal…and I didn’t have to stay up all night!”

People were encouraged to come to The River’s temporary studio downtown and donate, or call a special toll free number to donate over the phone. “On a personal note, I’m humbled by the generosity that surrounded The River’s first Radiothon,” Mattice said. “To all the volunteers who gave up their time on a Friday to help, local businesses who provided coffee, lunch and drinks for us and especially to the community of Mount Forest and area, from the large $5000 donation (to get their name on a bench) to the children who came in with their life savings. It really was a powerful day and I thank everyone who helped us beat our goal.”

Despite the tight deadline and planning period for this event, it went off very well. “A big thank you goes out to the organizers who helped up put this together on a tight schedule. We basically went from idea to execution in three weeks.” Said Mattice.

There is still a bit to go before a shovel can be put in the ground on the new splash park. “The fundraising continues as the committee still needs about $75,000 to get the construction started. Look for Lion’s events (like road tolls and the Fireworks Festival ‘Light Up the Night’ tickets) this spring as they are also raising money for the splash pad.” Said Mattice.
