Fake Charity Phone Scam

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Wellington OPP is warning the public about a phony charity scam making the rounds in the region.
Several people have called police to complain about phone calls from someone pretending to work for a charity. They usually use high pressure pitch or sales tactics over the phone, trying to get you to donate.
Police are telling the public that this is a scam and you should never send money to anyone over the phone, unless you are 100 percent certain you know where the funds are going. It is very hard to know exactly who you may be speaking with; even call displays can be falsely represented. Another flag when dealing with donation requests are high pressure tactics; reputable charities do not rely on pressure to get donations. Always do your homework and if you have a charity you wish to support, reach out to them.
If you believe that you have been a victim of a fraud you may report it on-line to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (or call 1-888-495-8501) or contact the OPP (1-888-310-1122).
