MOUNT FOREST – Nobody was seriously injured after a structure fire at the Birmingham Retirement Community in Mount Forest.
Fire crews responded to the blaze on Friday night at 356 Birmingham Street. When they arrived, heavy smoke was coming form the second floor of the East wing. 40 residents from the east wing were evacuated to a recreation room on the ground floor.
Fire crews from Mount Forest, Arthur, and Harrison responded.
One resident was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Damage to the building is estimated at $5,000. No word at this time as to what caused the heavy smoke.
Charges under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act are pending against the Owner of the property. The charges will be with respect to; Fire Emergency Procedures as described in their Fire Safety Plan.
